The “I’m Afraid” mobile phone app is part of the CITYCoP research project (citycop.eu) exploring the use of smart phone apps for community policing. As part of this project the Department of Cognitive Science at the University of Malta is conducting research examining fear of crime for which the “I’m Afraid” mobile phone app has been developed. This app allows the user to record their level of fear of crime both for themselves and for other people, to select the reason(s) for why they are afraid and enables the user to take a photo of why they are afraid (only if it is safe to do so).

The “I’m Afraid” mobile phone app is the second phase of the fear of crime research, and is preceded by a survey examining fear of crime, attitudes to risk and community policing and will be followed by a feedback questionnaire examining the user’s experience of the mobile phone app.

All data recorded will be anonymous so that individual users cannot be identified and will be stored on a secure server only accessible by the research team. Results from the analysis of the data will be used in reports to the European Commission and in academic publications.
